Juice Diet

Photobucket
So we watched the movie "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead." Neither one of us is any of that, but we thought a lot of the things in them movie were still true of us. We had been eating too much unhealthy, processed foods while living on the move. It is an easy thing to fall into, and for Frank (and by default) the kids they ended up eating too many processed sweets. Oreas, ice cream, crappy cereal.

We bought a juicer, this one we bought from Walmart-we returned it asap. It did not do a good job and it wasted a lot of the juice. This was the first juice though! I immediately learned that I did not love the juice. Possibly because my husband thought a substantial chunk of ginger would be good in everything and honestly people, sometimes ginger causes the immediate desire to vomit.

Yes he is giving me the "really, you think this is a good idea" look. He did this exclusively for several days and now he has added in 1 healthy meal per day, and this morning he even took a smoothie to work for breakfast.

This is a vita mix, this one is my new pet. The juicer is his! I blend up a lot of vegetables in this, I never notice kale or spinach and neither does he. I love both so neither would be a problem for me taste-wise, but the carrots/celery and ginger are not something that I enjoy. He made "salsa juice" which is excellent, all the ingredients for pico de gallo makes salsa juice. That is his favorite so far- the kids and I love green smoothies.

Finished product! We drink a whole pitcher of this a couple times a day, Frank uses the juicer primarily though the kids and I have enjoyed fruit juices from it. I like this machine because it is easy to clean, a little hot water and soap, turn it on high and its all clean. It is different than traditional blenders because you do not have to take the bottom off to clean it. It is all one piece, so nothing to get moldy and yucky.

This is a Breville juicer, we read reviews online before choosing. This happens to be the one that Joe Cross used in the movie as well, and it was in the more affordable range of juicers. It isnt too bad to clean, not as easy as the vita-mix.

Lastly a cook book, for juice! This is a neat book, it lists what is good for liver cleanse, kidney cleanse, different tonics. We are not changing our diets completely, we are just adding in better things, doing a short-term fast (not me, just Frank, all I did was modify by adding it to healthy foods) and then continuing with a diet higher in greens. That is something we are working on with gardening, greenhouse and aqua-ponics. We really are not doing this for weight, just for health.

*Note-juice fasting should never be done unless you are working with your doctor. You could have an unknown problem or deficiency and it can damage your body or worse. NEVER use a juice fast with children, if you feel that your child needs a dramatic diet change of any sort, you need to consult a doctor, not google.com. It is always ok to add in juices and smoothies to an already healthy diet, or use them to improve a diet but children should not diet without extreme care due to possible deficiencies and other unknowns.
